Failing the test means a re-test – and double the effort

Turn up for the HU/AU (the German MOT) without a check and you risk a defect report: you have to get repairs done, return for a re-test within a month and pay for the inspection a second time. Common reasons are worn brakes, misaligned headlights, corrosion or tyres below the tread limit.

That is why we check your car first and fix any defects after talking to you. Brakes and tyres are the most important points – not just for the inspection sticker (HU), but for your safety.

HU/AU, brakes and tyres from one workshop

The inspection organisation comes to our workshop. You drop your car off in the morning, we check it beforehand, fix minor defects after talking to you and present it to the inspector. You collect it with a new inspection sticker (HU).

What is included

  • HU and AU carried out by the inspection organisation right here at our workshop
  • Pre-check: brakes, steering, axles, lights, headlight alignment, tyres, glass, wipers, corrosion, fault memory
  • Brakes: pads, discs, brake fluid and lines in original-equipment quality
  • Tyres: wheel change, tread and pressure check, balancing
  • New tyres to suit your car and budget, storage until next season on request

Not included

  • The inspection fee of the test organisation is a separate item – we pass it on
  • Bodywork and paint defects (e.g. rust-through) go to our partner shop

How your car gets its inspection sticker (HU)

Drop it off once, collect it done.

  1. Appointment

Call us or ask online. We quote the price for the pre-check and the inspection fee.

  2. Pre-check

We check every point the inspector looks at. Small things such as bulbs or wiper blades are done straight away after a quick call.

    Duration: about 1 hour

  3. Inspection at our workshop

The inspection organisation carries out the HU and AU here. You do not need to be present.

  4. Collection

You collect your car with a new inspection sticker (HU) and the inspection report. If something is coming up that does not need doing right away, we tell you.

What does it cost?

Fixed price before we start. Extra work only after a phone call. We quote the pre-check, tyre change and brake work as a fixed price in advance. The test organisation’s inspection fee is added. Any parts the pre-check shows to be necessary are discussed with you before we fit them.

Example

Front brake pads on a mid-size car

If the discs are still good, they stay in. We only replace what is necessary and tell you why.

Tyre change including balancing and storage is also quoted as a fixed price.

Frequently asked questions

Your question is not here? Call us. We answer straight away.

When is my car due for the HU/AU (German MOT)?

New cars after three years, then every two years. The sticker on the rear number plate tells you when: the number at the top is the month, the one in the middle is the year.

What happens if my car fails?

You have one month to have the defects fixed and then take the car for a re-test. Because we check the car beforehand, this rarely happens with us. If it does, we repair the defects straight away.

What is the difference between HU and AU?

The HU (Hauptuntersuchung) checks road safety: brakes, lights, suspension, corrosion and more. The AU (Abgasuntersuchung) checks emissions and the fault memory. Both are done together, and you get one sticker at the end – the German equivalent of an MOT.

How do I know my brakes need checking?

If the brakes squeal or grind, the car pulls to one side, the pedal vibrates or the stopping distance gets longer. Also if the brake warning light comes on. Please come in soon – brakes are about safety.

When should I change my tyres?

The German rule of thumb is “O to O”: winter tyres from October to Easter. The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm – for safe driving we recommend 4 mm on winter and 3 mm on summer tyres.

Can you store my tyres?

Yes. After the change we store your wheels until the next season. That saves you space and the heavy lifting. We tell you the price when you book.
